HIPAA Portability
How does
HIPAA help ensure that employees can continue health care coverage?
HIPAA protects millions of American workers by improving the portability and continuity of their health insurance coverage. Among its many protections are:
- Limiting an insurer's ability to deny coverage for a preexisting condition
- Allowing individuals to enroll for new health coverage when they lose coverage in certain situations
- Allowing special enrollment rights for individuals when they marry or have a new dependent
- Ensuring that workers and their dependents are not denied coverage based on the status of their health
- Guaranteeing that health insurance coverage is available to small employers
- Guaranteeing that large and small employers can renew existing health insurance coverage
- Improving disclosure requirements for group health insurance plans
